What is an HTS Code?
The Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) is the classification system used by US Customs and Border Protection to determine import duty rates. Every product imported into the United States must be classified under a specific HTS code.
HTS codes are 10-digit numbers organized into 99 chapters. The first 6 digits follow the international Harmonized System (HS) used by over 200 countries. The remaining digits are US-specific and determine the exact duty rate.
HTS Code Structure
- Chapters (2 digits): Broad product categories (e.g., Chapter 85 = Electrical machinery)
- Headings (4 digits): Product groups within chapters (e.g., 8517 = Telephone sets)
- Subheadings (6 digits): International HS level (e.g., 8517.62 = Machines for reception/transmission)
- US Tariff Lines (8-10 digits): US-specific duty rates (e.g., 8517.62.0090 = Smartphones)
Additional Tariffs to Consider
Beyond the general duty rate, imports may be subject to:
- Section 301 tariffs: Additional 7.5-25% on Chinese goods
- Section 232 tariffs: 25% on steel, 10% on aluminum
- Anti-dumping duties: Product-specific surcharges
- Countervailing duties: Offsetting foreign government subsidies
